This project is a refurbishment of an existing semi in Bondi. For me the main aim was to build a tiny new pavilion at the rear to separate the experience of cooking and living from the remainder of the domestic.
This allowed us to then inter relate with the north facing backyard, allowing an experimentation in a linear island bench that stretches into the garden.
The construction of the new pavilion is very much a stand-alone timber post and beam exposed structure.
This allowed us to free up the gaps between the existing and new building that could then be opened and operated according to climate and use. The interior of the existing building became an exercise in detailed storage.
The result is that the main and best space of the building for me is the one that stretched from inside to outside as a covered and uncovered cooking and dining space.
